A Plank in a Shipwreck

"Tabula in naufragio"—a Latin phrase meaning “a plank in a shipwreck”—has been used in legal contexts to describe a final hope, a last lifeline. Here, the phrase offers an apt visceral metaphor for the bold leap each 2025 WARP Wood Fellow has made: crossing oceans and borders, letting go of safety, and trusting in a collaborative, uncertain process.

Cinders: Burner, Scorched, & Pyrographed Works in Wood

Cinders: Burned, Scorched, and Pyrographed Works in Wood presents artworks that revel in the incendiary properties of wood as a medium. Illustrated across twenty-six objects by twenty-two artists and largely drawn from the Museum’s permanent collection, Cinders delves into the enigmatic tension between permanence and fragility that materializes in fire-treated wood.

Workshops and Hands-on Activities

The Museum produces a number of events as well as workshops, master classes, and community engagements. Come for a family craft day, attend our signature salon series Object Lesson or join us for an exclusive talk with an artist or a figure from the craft community.

Tours

Guided group tours of the exhibition and collection are $5 per person, lasting 45-60 minutes, and require a minimum of 10 guests. Please book your group tour one month in advance.

Artist Residencies

For over two decades, the Museum has hosted fellows from around the world for its unique Windgate Arts Residency Program in Wood (WARP Wood). Each summer the residency brings together working artists, a student artist, a visual documentarian, and a scholar to live and work together in Philadelphia.

The Winter Residency is a collaboration between the Museum and NextFab, a network of membership-based maker spaces. The residency supports artists based in the Greater Philadelphia region working in wood and demonstrating a commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainable practices.
